Facility Planning

Facility Planning is a broad concept and is today seen as one of the core elements in developing a successful company.

The aim of this study is to understand and describe a specific facility’s planning processes with the main focus on one primary process. Well-developed facility planning contributes to lower costs for transport, production and materials. It includes several key areas within the company such as productivity, quality, and quick feedback about unpredictable changes. For example, a project in this course might focus on a current bottleneck in a department.

A project group in this course has previously chosen to conduct an analysis of materials handling. Two alternative facility plans were drawn up and presented to improve internal logistics. One plan aimed to increase the potential product size, while the other focused on an improved material flow. The project resulted in tangible recommendations such as widening the door for outgoing products and moving kitting to a more optimal area.
