Future-proof ventilation for a global industrial company

Reinhausen needed a ventilation solution that met current requirements while allowing for future expansion. With Envistar Flex and the integrated reversible heat pump ThermoCooler HP, a flexible, sustainable and energy-efficient solution was created.

In this video, join us as we visit Reinhausen and meet some of the key people involved in the project.

Reinhausen | Regensburg

Reinhausen is beautifully located in Haselbach outside Regensburg in southern Germany. With approximately 5,500 employees, the company develops and manufactures, among other things, load tap changers for power transformers used to stabilise the electricity grid. Globally, over 50 percent of the electricity produced is controlled using products from Reinhausen.

High demands on sustainability and scalability

When Reinhausen planned to build three new production halls, high demands were placed on ventilation, energy efficiency and future scalability. The new production areas cover a total of 7,200 m² and required a solution that combines a reliable air supply with low energy use and minimal installation effort.

Project requirements:

  • The ventilation solution had to be installed as rooftop air handling units in accordance with the building’s established architecture.
  • The system needed to be energy-efficient, compact and easy to maintain.
  • The customer requested a sustainable solution that could be adapted to future production expansion.
  • Installation time on site needed to be minimised to streamline the construction process.

At the same time, the aim was to avoid extensive external installations such as separate cooling units, large plant rooms and complex pipework.

Reinhausen viewed from above. The air handling units needed to be installed on the roof.

The reversible heat pump ThermoCooler HP is easily lifted into place and integrated into the air handling unit.

Integrated reversible heat pump provided several benefits

Six air handling units from the Envistar Flex range were selected for the project, equipped with the integrated reversible heat pump ThermoCooler HP. The units were supplied for outdoor installation with a weatherproof roof and adapted for rooftop installation. They were sized to deliver approximately 7.2 m³/s of fresh air to the production areas.

ThermoCooler HP operates as a heat pump in winter and as a cooling unit in summer. In addition to ventilation, the same unit can therefore both heat and cool the supply air. To cover the building’s transmission heat losses, an additional heat source is required, for example radiators or underfloor heating.

Benefits of ThermoCooler HP:

  • Reduced installation and planning time.
  • Fewer external components such as cooling units, mixing shunts and complex pipework.
  • Lower investment and operating costs.
  • Minimal space requirements.
  • High flexibility for future expansion.

Optimised sizing with IV Produkt Designer

The ventilation and HVAC system was designed by Ingenieurbüro Löw.

During the design phase, the IV Produkt Designer selection software was used to simulate different operating conditions and optimise the sizing based on the project's specific requirements. This enabled the project team to compare different solutions and ensure the best possible balance between energy efficiency, operating economy and performance.

A decisive factor in the choice of solution was the ability to combine the system with the solar panels on the roofs of the buildings.

Adrian Volk, Project Manager at Ingenieurbüro Löw, sees great potential for using similar systems in future projects.

We see great potential for using similar systems in future projects as well. The combination of technical support, individual adaptability and sustainable efficiency makes this solution particularly attractive for upcoming construction projects.

Reliable delivery – fast installation

The units were manufactured at our factory in Växjö and transported to Regensburg in southern Germany for installation.

Thanks to clear labelling as well as a well-designed construction and modular configuration, installation could be carried out quickly and efficiently by Lohner & Sohn GmbH & Co. KG.

The installer highlighted:

  • Easy assembly and adjustment.
  • Clearly labelled connections.
  • Fast electrical installation via quick connectors.
  • Factory-preconfigured units.
  • Simple and intuitive commissioning.

As the cooling function was already integrated into the air handling units, there was no need for separate cooling systems, mixing shunts or extensive pipe installations, saving both time and installation costs.

The delivery arrived on time and without any issues. The collaboration with IV Produkt and the factory in Sweden worked smoothly and efficiently. A major advantage is that the cooling function is integrated directly into the air handling units. This eliminates the need for separate installations such as cooling units, mixing shunts or long pipe runs. This saves time, costs and space.

Future-proof ventilation

The project resulted in a modern and sustainable ventilation solution that meets both current and future needs for the production facility.

Results:

  • Six air handling units with integrated reversible heat pumps installed for three production halls.
  • Energy-efficient complete solution for ventilation as well as heating and cooling of the supply air.
  • Reduced installation and operating costs.
  • Scalable solution for future expansion.
  • Fast and smooth installation and commissioning.

The project demonstrates how integrated ventilation solutions can contribute to both energy-efficient operation and simplified installation in modern industrial projects.
